On July 17, 1996 at approximately 830 P.M. TWA Fight 800, a Boeing 747 bound for Paris, exploded off the coast of East Moriches. Many local people responded to the crash scene to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts that took place immediately following the event. Tragically all 230 passengers and crew were lost. Approximately 1/2 mile west of town at Kahler's Pond a memorial and park in their memory has been constructed. If you visit our town please stop by to pay your respects.
